Professional Learning: Kindergarten Resources

Science North has developed new video resources, lesson plans, and supporting materials to help Ontario educators implement the updated Kindergarten curriculum.

These inquiry-based lesson plans highlight foundational concepts and skills that are the gateway to science, technology and engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This series supports teachers as they explore topics like colours, nature, and coding with their students.

Three students, playing with props imagining they're a astronauts or superheroes.

Lesson Plans and Videos:

STICKY WATER

Students will use a classic science demo to practice using Prediction and Observation skills, as well as using new scientific language (cohesion, adhesion) or demonstrating the concepts the language describes (water is sticky – to itself, and to other materials)

Lesson Plan

COLOUR MIX MAGIC

Students will participate in a variety of hands-on stations to understand basic properties of colour and light – additive colour mixing (more colours of light are reflected, such as mixing coloured light to make white light), subtractive colour mixing (fewer colours on the spectrum are reflected, like when we mix many colours of paint to make a dark, muddy colour), we can separate colours to see which colour components were present (chromatography)

Lesson Plan

SUN-SMART INNOVATORS

Students will begin to explore visible and invisible light, highlighting the power of invisible light with UV demonstrations and hands-on problem solving to protect themselves from UV light

Lesson Plan

CODING DANCE BOTS

Students will practice essential pre-coding skills like giving and following instructions, sequencing, left-to-right reading, and identifying patterns

NATURE DETECTIVES: COLLECT & COMPARE

Students will engage in hands-on data literacy exploration, by collecting data using a variety of techniques, comparing items by sorting and organizing data using a variety of tools, comparing/contrasting items based on identified attributes (large/small, square/circle, green/brown, etc.). They will also practice communicating their findings, engaging in the environment in a respectful and caring way.
