INDUSTRY CERTIFICATES

CAD/CAM; SECTOR SPECIFIC SOFTWARE; ADVANCED TRAINING IN A TECHNIQUE

Sectors: Aviation and Aerospace; Construction, Energy; Information and Communication Technology; Manufacturing; Transportation

Format: Science North, Classroom

Duration: Full Day 

Description: This program leads students through the creation of a mechanism. They will use software to create 3D models which can be printed using a 3D printer and then combined to create the mechanism (like a hinge). This program highlights the thought process of creating a tool or mechanism and the many methods CAD/CAM is used by industries.

CODING SPE

Sectors: All sectors

Format: Science North, Classroom, Virtual

Duration: Full Day

Description: In this program, students will learn the basics of app design and have the opportunity to create their own app specific to their sector. They will brainstorm unique ideas, model their design and have time to build their app, which can then be downloaded onto their own personal devices.

CONCUSSION AWARENESS

Sectors: Health and Wellness; Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services; Sports

Format: Science North, Classroom

Duration: 2 hours 

Description: This program will give students a better understanding of how concussions occur and the effects that they can have. Done in three parts, students will learn about the anatomy of the brain, use accelerometers to gauge how much force causes a concussion and use concussion goggles to simulate their effects.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Sectors: Health and Wellness; Non-Profit; Sports

Format: Science North, Classroom, Virtual

Duration: 2 hours

Description: Effective communication is an important skill to succeed in the workforce. This workshop explores the importance of communication and teaches students some of the techniques that will make them successful. Paired with engaging and interactive activities, students will have numerous opportunities to practice their communication skills as part of this workshop.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Sectors: All Sectors

Format: Science North, Classroom, Virtual

Duration: 2 hours

Description: Customer service is a skill used across a huge variety of sectors. This workshop will explore how customer service is relevant to specific sectors. In lessons paired with interactive scenarios and activities, students will practice their customer service skills in ways that apply to them and their sector.

EFFECTIVE NETWORKING

Sectors: Business

Format: Science North, Classroom, Virtual

Duration: 2 hours

Description: Effective networking is an important skill to succeed in the pursuit of goals and work. This workshop explores techniques for goal-setting, communication, strategies, and more in order to build skills for attending networking events, culminating with a mock networking event in which students can practice their skills.

GAME DESIGN; ADVANCED TRAINING IN A TECHNIQUE

Sectors: Arts and Culture; Information and Communication Technology

Format: Science North, Classroom, Virtual

Duration: 2 hours

Description: In an increasingly digital world, this workshop will build student digital literacy while providing them with an introduction to various coding skills used in game design. Students will use the platform MakeCode Arcade to make their own game with the guidance of a Science North Bluecoat. For the Science North and Classroom formats, students will be able to play their games on a PiBadge.

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) / ADVANCED TRAINING IN A TECHNIQUE

Sectors: Energy; Environment; Hospitality and Tourism; Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services, Sports, Mining

Format: Dynamic Earth

Duration: 2 hours

Description: GIS is more than just maps! Learn all about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how it can be used to investigate data. This hands-on certification program offered exclusively at Dynamic Earth is a great introduction to GIS and is an excellent compliment to our GPS certification program.

Format: Science North, Classroom

Duration: 2 hours

Description: In this highly interactive experience, students will have hands on experience with GPS devices as they explore outdoors. They will learn about geocaching, navigation, and other uses for GPS is several industries.

GROUP DYNAMICS

Sectors: Health and Wellness; Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services; Sports

Format: Science North, Classroom

Duration: 2 hours

Description: This workshop will teach students a variety of group based skills such as conflict resolution, building trust and blending strengths to allow them to succeed in a group setting. Filled with hands-on group activities, students will learn the qualities of a highly functional team and apply it in a variety of scenarios.

HABITAT RESTORATION

Sectors: Environment

Format: Science North, Classroom

Duration: 2 hours

Description: With environmental concerns on the rise and more and more sectors taking environmental impact into account, knowledge of and practice at habitat restoration is an important skill. Students will learn how broadly applicable habitat restoration is, practice solving problems around habitat restoration in various workplaces, and grow their ecological surveying and testing skills.

ICE SPE

Sectors: Health and Wellness; Sports; Mining; Environment; Construction; Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services; Business; Hospitality and Tourism; Non-Profit

Format: Science North, Classroom, Virtual

Duration: Full Day

Description: Science North has partnered with various partners to bring sector specific challenges to students. Presented as a pre-recorded video, students will be connected with a real-world partner with a real solution and be tasked with coming up with a solution. Students will brainstorm, prototype and present their solutions, which will be shared with the sector partners when finished.

LAB PRACTICES

Sectors: Health and Wellness

Format: Science North, Classroom

Duration: 2 hours

Description: This program provides students with hands-on experience that will introduce them to a variety of techniques used in a lab setting, including sterilization techniques, using micropipettes, performing serial dilutions and conduction a bioassay case study. 

LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Sectors: All Sectors

Format: Science North, Classroom, Virtual

Duration: 2 hours

Description: Leadership is a skill that can be learned and takes practice to improve at. This workshop will teach students about various leadership techniques, including influence without authority, and give them a platform to practice their leadership through a variety of activities.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Sectors: Business

Format: Science North, Classroom, Virtual

Duration: 2 hours

Description: Public speaking is an important skill from the classroom to the workplace. Students will learn strategies to create presentations with intent and purpose, and to identify their audience. They will build and improve a brief presentation to put these skills into practice.

TOUR GUIDE

Sectors: Hospitality and Tourism

Format: Science North, Classroom

Duration: 2 hours

Description: Students will learn skills in storytelling and public speaking, and how those skills are used by tour guides. They will also learn some tips and tricks for virtual tours and delivery, while experiencing a virtual tour of Science North from an expert.
