"Vaccines work by helping the team members in your immune system recognize the germs that are trying to infect you. Your immune system is different parts of your body that work together to protect you from infections," she answers.
"The faster these team members — or immune cells — can recognize a dangerous germ, the faster they can act to stop it. If your immune system has never seen a germ before, it can take up to two weeks for the immune cells to stop a germ. If the disease the germ causes is serious, it can take over your body before your immune system can stop it, and you may become extremely sick," says Jane.
"Here, take this," she adds as she hands you a small pamphlet.

"First, the rapid response team detects the damage to your skin and gets to work. This rapid response team defends against all the types of germs trying to infect you.
First on the scene are the neutrophils which use your bloodstream as a highway to rush over to the damage. Neutrophils are cells that eat germs, shoot out germ-killing chemicals and web-like germ traps.
They call in other first responders, like macrophages using chemical signals. Macrophage means big eater, and these cells swallow up whole germs, dead germs, parts of germs... you name it, macrophages eat it!" explains Commander T.

"Think about how you feel //$situation//. Now think about different aspects of getting a vaccine. Does anything about getting a vaccine make you feel the same way?" asks your teacher.
"Maybe you're nervous about the needle, or you don't know what's going to happen on vaccination day," they add.

The exhibit sign reads, "The earliest we have records of smallpox is in the year 910."
"We have many sources describing how people protected themselves against smallpox in China and India," Max begins. "They would take the scabs of infected people, grind them up, and blow them up the nostrils of uninfected people. They also might have scratched some parts of the smallpox sores into their skin. We call this variolation.

"Wow, all those people invented smallpox vaccines throughout history!" you exclaim.
"Those ways of achieving immunity weren't quite like vaccines," Max interjects. "They were called variolation. Variolation is different than a vaccine because variolation uses live materials directly from people infected with smallpox. This method was safer than getting the disease, but still a little risky because you could get smallpox."
"Vaccines, on the other hand, use a weakened, dead or part of a germ. So they are safe and work very well, and you cannot catch the disease, unlike variolation," he adds.

"Edward Jenner tested this by taking stuff from the sores of a person infected with ''cowpox ''and scraping it into the skin of a boy named James Phipps. This would get the cowpox virus into James' system. James felt a little sick for a few days but quickly got better.
Then, Edward Jenner did the same procedure, but with ''smallpox'' instead of cowpox. If James got sick, that meant getting cowpox wouldn't protect you from getting smallpox. But if he didn't get sick, we would know that getting the milder disease cowpox would protect you from smallpox," Max explains.
"James didn't get sick at all! So, Jenner knew vaccinating using cowpox would be much safer than using smallpox!" he adds.

"Edward Jenner called this new technique of using safer material to provide immunity, vaccination," he notes.
"We developed newer and safer vaccines as time went on. Eventually, once more people got vaccinated, smallpox started to disappear. The World Health Organization started a Smallpox Eradication Program to eliminate smallpox from the world," he adds.
"Did they succeed?" you ask.
"We did succeed. The last case of smallpox was in 1977, in someone who hadn't been vaccinated. They recovered from the infection and went on to be an advocate for vaccines," answers Max.

Some African people developed a similar way of using variolation to protect against smallpox.
In North America, smallpox swept through Boston, Massachusetts, in 1721. An enslaved African person named Onesimus had introduced the concept of variolation to a Boston minister. During the 1721 epidemic, a doctor variolated 248 people," Max explains.
"The chances of dying after getting variolated was 3%, but the chances of dying after getting smallpox was 14%. Although variolation was a little risky, it was much safer than catching smallpox naturally," he adds.
